Contact lenses and eyeglasses are prescribed in terms of two powers or parameters: a spherical and a cylinder power. The sphere prescription is written with a + sign for farsighted people and a - sign for those who are nearsighted; the cylinder power which indicates the amount of correction needed for astigmatism is always negative. In both cases, the unit of measurement is the diopter (D).
